Medical Imaging and Radiology DirectoryRadiology, Medical Imaging and Nuclear MedicineMedical imaging uses processes that create images of body parts, tissues, or organs to diagnose or examine disease. Medical imaging includes x-ray methods, magnetic resonance imaging, single-photon-emission and positron-emission tomography, ultrasound, endoscopy, medical thermography and medical photography. Nuclear medicine uses radioactive materials, known as radiopharmaceuticals or radiotracers, to create images to diagnose illness. Radiotracers are injected, ingested or inhaled, and emit gamma rays which are detected by a gamma camera, a (positron emission tomography) PET scanner and/or probe. Computers measure the amount of radiotracer absorbed by your body and produce detailed images showing the structure and function of organs and other internal body parts.
